Useful Tips To Spot Fake Funko Pops
1. Check the Box and Packaging
It all starts with the Box.
One of the easiest ways to spot a fake Funko Pop is by carefully inspecting the box. Here’s what to look for:
- Box Art and Font: The box art on a real Funko Pop is crisp, vibrant, and clear. Counterfeit boxes often have blurry images, incorrect colours, or fonts that are slightly off where they should be. Pay close attention to the size and style of the font used for the character’s name and the Funko logo and compare them to Pops you have that you know are legitimate.
- Serial Numbers and Barcodes: Every genuine Funko Pop has a unique serial number printed on the bottom of the box and sometimes on the figure itself. If the serial number is missing, mismatched, or looks suspicious, it’s likely a fake. Scanning the barcode is another good step, but remember that if the UPC number doesn’t show up, it might be an indication of a counterfeit. However, some legitimate products might not have their UPCs registered in every database, so this should prompt further investigation rather than immediate judgment.
2. Examine the Figure’s Quality
Fake Funko Pops often have very noticeable differences from authentic versions of the fakes.
Here’s what to check:
- Paint Job: The real genuine Funko Pops have clean, precise paint applications. If you notice messy lines, uneven paint, or colours that don’t match the character, it’s likely a fake. Common areas where fakes fail include the eyes, logos, and intricate small details.
- Material and Weight: The materials used for fake Funko Pops can feel different from the real thing. Authentic Pops are made from high-quality vinyl and have a consistent weight. If your figure feels too light or flimsy, it might be a counterfeit.
- Mould and Design: Look closely at the figure’s mould and design details. Fake figures often have imperfections like extra plastic, incorrect shapes, or missing details. Compare your figure to images of the genuine product to spot any discrepancies.
3. Verify with the Community
When in doubt, reach out to the Funko Pop community. Social media platforms, forums, and collector groups are filled with experienced fans who can help you determine if your figure is real or fake. The ActionFigureGeek Reddit is a great place to start.
- Online Comparisons: Compare your Funko Pop to high-resolution images online. Websites like the official Funko site, eBay listings from trusted sellers, and collector forums can be valuable resources. Look for any differences in colour, mould, or packaging.
- Social Media and Forums: Posting pictures of your Funko Pop in collector groups or on social media can get you quick feedback from other collectors. They can point out any red flags or confirm if your figure is legitimate.
4. Purchase from Reputable Sources
The best way to avoid buying a fake Funko Pop is to purchase from reputable sources. Here are some tips:
- Authorized Retailers: Buy from official Funko retailers or directly from the Funko website. This greatly reduces the chances of encountering a counterfeit product.
- Trusted Sellers: If you’re buying from a third-party seller, check their reviews, ratings, and history of selling Funko Pops. Reputable sellers will have a track record of satisfied customers and authentic products.
- Secondhand Market: When buying Funko Pops from sites like eBay or Facebook Marketplace, be extra cautious. Ask the seller for additional pictures, and request information about where they originally purchased the item.
5. Use Authentication Services
If you’re still unsure about the authenticity of a Funko Pop, consider using a professional authentication service. These services can provide a certificate of authenticity and give you peace of mind that your figure is the real deal.
Final Thoughts
Spotting a fake Funko Pop can be challenging, especially as counterfeiters become more sophisticated. However, by following these tips and staying informed, you can protect yourself from fake figures and keep your collection genuine.
Remember, when it comes to collecting, knowledge is power. Always research and verify before making a purchase, and don’t hesitate to seek advice from fellow collectors.
We hope this guide has helped you on your journey to becoming a more savvy Funko Pop collector!
Happy collecting!

I have received figures where the bottoms are different. Some are all grey, white and black. Others have some blue, green and yellow. Is this any indication of real vs fakes???
It sounds like they are fakes but would need to see images to confirm this.
