AFGeek Aquaman 2 The Lost City Review – Are the Pops better than the movie?
“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” follows Arthur Curry, played by Jason Momoa, who is grappling with the challenges of being King of Atlantis while also raising his son on dry land. His attempts to bridge the gap between Atlantis and the surface world face resistance from the Atlantean council, which in essence mirrors the conflict in Marvel’s “Black Panther.”
The story takes a turn when a vengeful pirate, Black Manta played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, obtains the Black Trident, an enchanted weapon with superpowers and a psychic link to an undead monster.
To stop Manta, Arthur reluctantly teams up with his half-brother, Orm played by Patrick Wilson, the big bad from Aquaman’s first movie outing.
The narrative explores Arthur’s struggle with balancing his responsibilities as a king and a father.
Despite Momoa’s charismatic performance, the film falls short of recapturing the charm of its predecessor.
Amber Heard’s character, Mera, is notably sidelined, and the movie lacks the compelling elements that would justify its existence.
The plot becomes convoluted as Manta’s quest for revenge intertwines with ancient power sources, feuding dynasties, and a lost kingdom.
The sequel’s strengths lie in the chemistry between Momoa and Wilson, who deliver a buddy comedy dynamic as they embark on a mission to thwart Manta’s destructive plans.
The film, however, struggles to find a cohesive tone, oscillating between Momoa’s charismatic humor and attempts at horror elements by director James Wan.
While the movie boasts impressive CGI and diverse settings, the overall execution leaves much to be desired.
The rushed pacing, lack of consequences for seemingly fatal injuries, and the absence of emotional depth contribute to a film that fails to match the original’s audacity and spectacle.
In the end, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is a mixed bag that relies on Momoa’s on-screen presence and chemistry with Wilson to carry it through, but it ultimately lacks the original’s grandiosity and falls short of providing a satisfying conclusion to the DC cinematic universe.
But the Aquaman 2 Funko Pops still rock if you are a Funko fan!
