From Page to Plastic: A brief History of Marvel Legends Action Figures
Marvel Legends, a line of action figures first produced by Toy Biz and later Hasbro, has become a strong cornerstone of superhero action figure collections since they made their debut in 2002.
The series was initially launched by toy company Toy Biz and quickly revolutionized the action figure industry with its detailed sculpts, extensive articulation, and high-quality accessories, setting a new standard for collectable figures.
Each ToyBiz figure also came with a comic book that served as an introduction to each character.
The Toy Biz Era (2002-2006)
The Marvel Legends series began as a successor to Toy Biz’s Spider-Man Classics line with the first Legends wave including iconic characters such as Steve Rogers’s Captain America, Tony Stark’s Iron Man, and the green giant himself The Incredible Hulk.
ToyBiz figures were notable for their extensive articulation and detailed sculpts, which allowed for figures with dynamic posing and display options and also introduced the concept of the Build-A-Figure (BAF) in 2005, where each figure in a wave included a part to assemble a larger figure.
The BAF figure added an extra layer of excitement and collectibility to the value and also made the figures, particularly during the ToyBiz years value for money.
Early waves of ToyBiz Legends waves featured popular characters and built a strong fanbase, cementing Marvel Legends as a must-have line for collectors. These are the figures that are really worth decent money now and were a good investment if you purchased them.
This was a time when Marvel Legends were exceptional value for money.
The Hasbro Era (2007-Present)
In 2007, Hasbro acquired the Marvel license and took over the Marvel Legends line and the price point almost doubled overnight.
While there were initial concerns about changes in design and quality and the cost of the figures, Hasbro quickly proved its commitment to the line and produced good figures, though the early waves were very uninspiring.
They thankfully continued the BAF – Build-A-Figure tradition and expanded the popular line to include more obscure and new fan-favourite characters from the Marvel Universe.
The clamshell packaging bit the dust in favour of the cardboard packaging we see today and we lost the comic book that you got with every ToyBiz Legends figure.
Over the years, Hasbro has introduced various innovations, including improved articulation, more detailed sculpts, and a wider range of accessories.
