After the conclusion of the Clone Wars, Captain Rex removed his inhibitor chip. This chip would have forced him to obey the orders of the Empire.
Breaking free he went into hiding with a group of other former clone troopers.
He eventually emerged as a resistance fighter against the Empire and continued to fight for what he believed was right.
