Luffy’s quest for One Piece has only just begun in Netflix’s One Piece live-action series and he has really only just started assembling the Straw Hat Pirates, but despite the infancy of the show, Netflix is already dropping some pretty major hints for three future Straw Hat Pirates additions.
Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece anime and manga series follows Monkey D. Luffy’s Straw Hat Pirates a rag-tag crew in search of the Pirate King Gol D. Roger One Piece treasure with Season 1 of Netflix’s live-action adaptation adopting the the same format for introducing the main cast of One Piece. Season 1 sees Across the first eight episodes of sea-faring shenanigans, Luffy joined by navigator and thief Nami, the swordsman Roronoa Zoro, the sharpshooting liar Usopp, and the always-good-in-a-fight high-kicking chef Sanji.
There are just 5 Straw Hat Pirate crew members so far but we know from the anime and manga series that this number is to grow. At the time of writing, we know that there are currently 10 Straw Hats in Eiichiro Oda‘s masterpiece, and Netflix’s One Piece live-action adaptation wastes very little time hinting at some of the cool new additions coming to series 2, setting up no one, not two but three future Straw Hat Pirates crew members
Netflix’s Teases Chopper as the Next Straw Hat Crew Member for Season 2 of One Piece
If you delve into the original One Piece anime/manga then the next Straw Hat Pirate to join Luffy’s inspirational crew is Tony Tony Chopper a reindeer that ate the Hito Hito no Mi, a Devil Fruit allowing its user to transform into a human hybrid or a human at will. Chopper is the Straw Hats ship’s doctor.
Now the Netflix live-action One Piece has subtly foreshadowed Chopper’s arrival in the scene when Zoro is critically wounded in the duel with Dracule Mihawk. Luffy, Nami, and Usopp come to the realization that their Zoro urgently needs a medic. As Luffy, Nami, and Usopp return to Baratie for assistance, Luffy is heard muttering, “We need a doctor.” Luffy is talking about finding a doctor to tend to Zoro’s wounds but also suggests that Luffy is contemplating adding a permanent resident doctor to the Straw Hat crew.
Zoro’s injuries are a wake-up call to Luffy who now realizes how sailing the Grand Line will inevitably mean more injuries to his friends as they search for the One Piece, and the absence of a capable doctor among the crew could prove fatal. This directly sets up Monkey D Luffy to ask Chopper to join the Straw Hats as a doctor One Piece season 2.
One Piece Teases Nico Robin & Jinbe: When Will They Join the Crew?
According to One Piece canon the next Straw Hat crew member after Tony Tony Chopper is Nico Robin and Netflix has also teased her arrival.
Before Luffy and Zoro first meet Zoro comes into contact with an agent from Baroque Works. Vice-Admiral Garp also discusses the Baroque Works organization in One Piece season 1. Our takeaways from this are that Baroque Works will play a major role in season 2, and following the story from the anime/manga we know that Nico Robin is one of the Baroque Works highest ranking criminals. So we can expect that Nico Robin to appear very soon.
The Baroque Works organization also brings into play Vivi, an honorary member of the Straw Hat crew.
As well as the arrival of Nico Robin we expect to see the fish-man Jinbe joining the Straw Hat Pirates. An angry Arlong name-checks Jinbe and reveals his esteemed status as a Warlord of the Sea. No other details are shared with the audience but this Jinbe shout-out does tease that the fishman is to become a future crew member.
The arrival of Chopper and Nico Robin both look like very safe bets to make their appearances in One Piece season 2, Jinbe on the other hand is very unlikely to arrive in live-action form soon. With the One Piece live-action series current pacing Jinbe would be making an appearance potentially in season 5 if not later with Jinbe officially joining the Straw Hats much later.
