In the finale, Mando really did try his best to control the Rancor and as a result, was almost eaten alive. Thank goodness Beskar steel armor is so strong.
But all his best efforts Mando ended in failure, the beast was just too big and too powerful. It was then that Grogu stepped up to show that size doesn’t matter and helps The Mandalorian.

In the Star Wars Universe, Rancors are creatures of a quadrupedal alien species from the hostile planet Dathomir.
We were first introduced to the Rancor on the big screen in The Return of the Jedi when Luke Skywalker goes to Jabba the Hutts Palace to secure the release of Han Solo and Chewbacca. Initially, Luke’s plan doesn’t go well when he finds himself as a proposed meal for the Rancor when he falls into the Rancor’s enclosure below Jabba’s throne room.
It was not really until the Book of Boba Fett that we saw Rancors on the screen again.
Despite the fact that Rancors are huge monsters they do hide a sweet caring side to their nature. When a Rancor is born, they form a strong bond of affection with the first creature they see and will do anything to defend them.
In the hands of the Hutt family, Rancors are used as a weapon and tool of power.
