The Cocaine Bear movie is, amazingly based on the real-life story of a black bear in Georgia that happened upon a large amount of cocaine (not known to be readily available in the bear’s habitat) that was dropped by a drug smuggler in 1985 in northern Georgia, USA.
The black bear who was later nicknamed “Pablo Escobear“, accidentally consumed a large quantity of the shipment that was evacuated from the plane.
The cocaine was being smuggled by a drug dealer named Andrew Thornton, who had apparently suffered a mid-air drug-induced panic attack and threw several duffel bags containing more than 70 pounds of cocaine out of the airplane before jumping out himself.
One of the bags landed near the bear, who ate the contents and died shortly after.
The bear’s body was later found by authorities, and an autopsy revealed that the animal had consumed an enormous amount of cocaine.
The story became a media sensation and is now often cited as an example of the bizarre and dangerous consequences of drug smuggling.
The bear’s remains were eventually donated to the Kentucky Fun Mall, where they were mounted and put on display as a popular exhibit.
The story of the Cocaine Bear is a fascinating true-life tale that has inspired a movie adaptation and a whole range of merch including these cool Cocaine Bear Funko Pops.
