In Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, and Groot team up to control and protect the purple Power Stone which is one of the Infinity Stones that Thanos collected in Avengers: Infinity War.
During the Guardian’s battle with Ronan on his ship the craft is damaged and destined to crash land and kill all onboard until Groot selflessly creates a strong protective shield out of his branches and leaves to protect them but at the cost of his fully grown life.
Fortunately, Groot didn’t disappear for too long. Rocket replants a stem of Groot in a pot and Baby Groot is born.
To you and me, Groot doesn’t tend to say too much. He can often be heard saying “I am Groot!” and various other grunts and groans. But Groot is actually capable of saying quite a lot more in his own language “Groot-ese.”
